Luxardo Maraschino Cherries are exquisite candied cherries soaked in Luxardo marasca cherry syrup. Each jar and tin contains about 50% marasca cherries and 50% syrup, with no thickening agents or preservatives, and the rich dark red colour is completely natural. The distinctive taste comes from the marasca cherry syrup, made from the same juice used for the infusion in the Cherry Liqueur “Sangue Morlacco”. A state-of-the-art pasteurisation process ensures maximum preservation and safety.

The lengthy candying process of Luxardo Original Maraschino Cherries gives them a unique crispiness, setting them apart from other brands. Just as in the golden age of cocktails, these cherries are a favourite among top bars and renowned mixologists, serving as a perfect garnish in various creations. The syrup itself is versatile, making a flavourful addition to many cocktails as a flavoured sugar, and the cherries are also ideal when served over ice cream.

Dalmatia, a picturesque region stretching 600km along the eastern shores of the Adriatic Sea, holds a rich history. Zara, once the Venetian capital of Dalmatia for four centuries, witnessed subsequent rule by Napoleon's France and later Austria. In 1817, Girolamo Luxardo, serving as a consular representative, relocated his family to Zara. His wife, Maria Canevari, devoted herself to perfecting "Rosolior Maraschino," a liqueur with medieval origins often crafted in convents. Establishing a distillery in 1821, Girolamo tirelessly refined the liqueur, earning an exclusive "Privilege" from the Emperor of Austria—an esteemed recognition of Luxardo's exceptional quality. To this day, the company proudly bears the title of "Privilegiata Fabbrica Maraschino Exelsior." Luxardo's influence extended internationally as their Maraschino liqueur became an essential ingredient in cocktails. The family expanded their repertoire, introducing products like the Cherry Liqueur "Sangue Morlacco," Original Maraschino Cherries, Limoncello, and more.

In 1913, Michelangelo Luxardo, the third-generation heir, erected a state-of-the-art distillery, likely the largest in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. A testament to its significance, the impressive structure still stands on Zara's harbour, serving as the headquarters and residence of the Luxardo family. However, the outbreak of World War II in 1940 disrupted their industrial activities. The distillery and the city itself faced devastation from indiscriminate bombings by Anglo-American forces in 1943-44. As German troops withdrew from Dalmatia in late 1944, Tito's partisans took over. The majority of the surviving Italian population was forced into exile, scattering to Italy and various parts of the world, including Australia, Canada, and the Americas. Tragically, many members of the Luxardo family fell victim to the turmoil, with Pietro Luxardo being kidnapped and Nicolo II and his wife Bianca senselessly drowned by the invaders.
